The Aftonbladet ‘Blood Libel’

Since the Swedisch daily Aftonbladet’s publication of an article about harvesting of human organs by the IDF, Our sons are plundered of their organs, a hot debate has erupted. In a few articles in different media, I have argued that Boström here is playing on age-old anti-Semitic myths of blood libels, let be ina new form. Unfortunately, my articles are in Swedish, but are available here, the first about the history of the blood libels, and the second about not underestimating anti-Semitic potential:

Bakgrunden till myten om den blodtörstige juden

Underskatta inte den antisemitiska potentialen

  1. You were principled and courageous to challenge that ugly reporting and identify it for what it was: unprofessional journalism, that did not bother even to investigate its sources, and thereby becomes part of the story, and partisan in perpetuating an act of mindless medieval hatred.

  2. Yes, it is remarkable to see how easy it was for a Swedish socialist newspaper to tap into that old malstream. There is a whole story behind it, described in the fine Swedish dissertation Bachner, Henrik, 1959-. Återkomsten: antisemitism i Sverige efter 1945 / Henrik Bachner. – 1999. – ISBN: 91-27-07641-5 (The Return: Anti-Semitism in Sweden after 1945). This shows how media and some scholars, especially after 1967, were using classical anti-Semitic motives, however in new clothes. Because of this tradition it is all too easy to continue caricaturing Jews, qua Jews.
